This term’s theme, ‘It’s a Mystery’, is a multidisciplinary unit with particular focus on science and literacy. Learning will be fast-paced, rigorous and specifically designed to meet our GATE children’s higher level learning needs. Within this theme there will be diverse challenges. Throughout the programme, the children will:

  1. Learn about cognition - the ability to think and know.  This will lead naturally into their investigating an unsolved mystery of their own choice.

  1. Gain an understanding of the cellular anatomy of neurons and the concepts of communication between nerves (neural transmission) in order to:

  2. -  understand what makes up the brain

  3. -  understand the parts of the brain

  4. -  understand how the brain communicates with the rest of the body

  5. -  use this knowledge to construct models of the brain.

  1. Compare online and print sources of information to gain answers to questions. They will skim, scan, note take and paraphrase in order to:

  2. -  identify main ideas, critical and supporting details, author’s purpose, and point of view

  3. -  distinguish fact from opinion

  4. -  draw a conclusion from implicit information

  5. -  determine the difference between factual information and information based on interpretation or analysis

  6. -  evaluate the reliability of sources and author’s qualifications

  7. -  predict, clarify, analyse, and critique a speaker’s information and point of view

  8. -  plan, develop, and produce a visual presentation using a variety of media.

The children’s learning experiences will be enhanced with the unique leading edge technology of eTime. Tasks will be set using Bloom’s Taxonomy and Socratic questioning techniques.

Trips to the Art Gallery, Arts Centre, adjacent historic buildings and the Botanic Gardens are some of the possible sites that the children will use in exploring this term’s theme. Digital footage of these excursions and internet research will be combined to create this term’s ‘It’s a Mystery’ website.
